Avalanche Course for School Children – Theory and Practice
As a company active in the field of avalanche protection we attach great importance to preventative training and education – especially towards the younger generation, in order to create an awareness of risk and safety at an early age.
That’s why the voluntary avalanche course for pupils at Reichenbach High School took place on November 29, 2024. Due to a lack of snow, the course was not held in the Kiental valley as planned but on the Engstligenalp. Nine bright and interested students took part in the course. The course began with a theoretical introduction in which the participants learned about the formation of avalanches, risk assessment, and equipment. Particular attention was given the use of avalanche transceivers and the importance of a probe and shovel in an emergency.
In the practical session, the students were able to put what they had learned directly into practice. Active searching with the avalanche transceiver was practiced in realistic exercises. The participants then practiced probing and effective “shoveling” in order to be able to rescue buried people quickly and efficiently.
The course was a complete success and provided the young people not only with important knowledge, but also with the skills to act safely and decisively in an emergency.
